This inventive, visually spectacular and engrossing fantasy drama tells the story of an imaginative boy and his unconventional response to heavy problems with his elders. In his dreams he conjures an ancient yew-tree monster (Liam Neeson) who tells him stories that annoy him by ending in moral ambiguity, recreated in beautiful animated watercolors, to help the vulnerable boy deal with the complex feelings about the terminal illness taking his mom (Felicity Jones), his unsympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), his bullying classmates and his absent father. This beautiful and powerful film is directed by Guillermo del Toro protégé JA Boyne (The Impossible) with a screenplay by Patrick Ness, the author of the award-winning YA novel on which the film is based.
