20TH CENTURY WOMEN

As he used the autobiographical story of his father for his film Beginners, writer-director Mike Mills uses an autobiographical story from a different era (the late 1970s) in this small domestic drama about life with his non-conformist mother (Annette Bening) in his latest film, which is Oscar-nominated for Original Screenplay. Living in his mom’s Santa Barbara boarding house, teenaged Jamie is beginning to pull back from his relationship with his mom, so she enlists two other women – of two different ages, the neighbor girl (Elle Fanning) a few years older on whom Jamie has a serious crush, and their tenant, a flakey photographer (Greta Gerwig) – to help her guide him and shape his future. This slice of life is a striking, delightful and rich comedy featuring compelling performances.
