This playful, engrossing historical fiction, both comically absurdist and engrossingly intelligent from Pablo Larrain (No, Jackie), one of Chile’s pre-eminent filmmakers, follows a dogged detective (Gael Garcia Bernal) who is determined to apprehend the outspoken and recently outlawed Communist Senator and revered populist poet Pablo Neruda (Chilean comic Luis Gnecco) before he can escape into exile in neighboring Argentina. As these two men play a game of cat and mouse, the filmmaker explores themes of arts and democracy struggling against political authority.
