Based on extraordinary true events, a diplomatic dispute became a geopolitical event when the young crown prince (David Oyelowo, Queen of Katwe) of the British protectorate that became the independent country of Botswana fell in love with a middle class, white office girl (Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl) while studying in London. Their proposed marriage caused a rift between each of them and their families, as well as between the British government and the neighboring South Africans who were just beginning their racist apartheid policy and were loath to have a mixed race monarch right next door. This romantic drama, partly filmed on location in Botswana, directed by Anna Asante (Belle) and based on the book Colour Bar by Susan Williams, shows the quiet courage these two young people exhibited in standing up to the bigotry they faced.
