Oscar-nominated actress Isabelle Huppert (Elle) gives another amazing, and completely different, performance in this film of a woman in transition from French director Mia Hansen-Løve, who based this beautiful and thoughtful domestic drama laced with humor partly on her own parent’s divorce. Nathalie is a High School philosophy teacher who finds herself unexpectedly and suddenly divorced when her husband leaves her for a younger woman. After additional pivotal events, including putting her mother into nursing care, taking ownership of her grouchy cat to whom she is allergic, and reconnecting with a favorite student, she must reexamine her life, and realizes that no amount of book-learning can fully prepare you for life’s lessons.
