Director Sophia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides) earned the Best Director award at the most recent Cannes Festival, only the second woman to be so honored, for this refreshing and haunting melodramatic thriller. Starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning, the emotionally nuanced story tells of the upheaval caused by a charming but manipulative Union soldier found wounded in the woods by a student at a sheltered southern girls seminary during the Civil War. The strong and competent headmistress does not turn him over to the Confederate Army but provides him refuge at the school to heal; his presence however causes sexual tension and dangerous rivalries that upset the tranquility of the place. This film is based on the same 1966 novel that was made into a film starring Clint Eastwood in 1971.
