This fascinating, multi-layered coming-of-age film from Chinese American documentary filmmaker Miao Wang (Beijing Taxi) has won the Best Documentary award both at this year’s SXSW film festival and Boston Independent Film Fest. From the initial application thru graduation, she follows two affluent city kids, outgoing and fun-loving Stella from Shanghai and introspective and philosophical Harry from Guangzhou, who as parachute kids travel to rural Fryeburg Academy in western Maine for high school. While avoiding the dreaded Chinese college exam, the expectations of these two different students of what American high school will be like are challenged by reality, each undergoing remarkable changes over their three years in Maine.
