This fictionalized story of a real gym teacher who created a legendary program that gave rise to champions is captivating and inspiring. A young Estonian man, Endel Nelis, returns home from Leningrad in the early 1950s, during Stalin’s rule, after being sought by the secret police. He finds work in a school and starts teaching his students his greatest passion, fencing, becoming a role model for many of these children who were orphaned during the war. When they discover a fencing tournament in Russia, they want to attend, but does he risk everything to take them? Finnish director Klaus Härö deftly directs guides this audience-pleasing story, which was Finland’s entry to last year’s Oscars.
