After being a big winner at the recent Golden Globes with four awards, for best Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress/Drama and Best Picture/Drama (and also the Toronto Film Fest’s Audience Choice Award winner) Martin McDonagh’s latest (In Bruges) is a likely Oscar contender. Frances McDormand stars as a grieving mom in a rural town who is increasingly angered that her local police force has no leads in the brutal rape and murder of her daughter months ago. Woody Harrelson is the police chief and Sam Rockwood his immature and violent deputy whose involvement only makes things worse. This is a poignant, profound unpredictable and moving story with complex characters and wrenching humor.
