Distilling the hostilities between two religious groups down to a single slight, this Oscar-nominated legal thriller from Lebanon tells of how a petty dispute over a broken drainpipe is blown out of proportion, leading a Lebanese Christian auto mechanic and a Palestinian refugee construction crew boss to a gripping face-off in court, despite the pleas by their wives to be reasonable. Directed by Muslim filmmaker Ziad Doueiri (The Attack) and co-written with his ex-wife, a Christian, this empathetic and riveting film explores social divisions and identity injustice in a part of the world rife with tension, but it could be about the escalation of a conflict between any two starkly divided groups.
