Geoffrey Rush and Armie Hammer portray Swiss modernist sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti and his friend, art-lover and American writer James Lord in the latest film from writer and director Stanley Tucci (Big Night) based on Lord’s memoir. Giacometti, famously obsessive and perfectionist, tells his friend he would like to paint his picture before he heads back to the US… “it will only take a few hours…” His studio is a mess, his wife (Sylvie Testud), his muse (Clemence Poésy) and his brother (Tony Shaloub) interrupt the work. He must start again as it isn’t right. Eighteen days and many flight postponements later, the piece might be done. This is the portrait of a tortured artist in 1964 Paris and an exploration of the process of artistry.
