This contemporary western, filmed on location on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, is an absorbing hybrid film, partly a documentary and partly a fictional feature. When Chinese-born, American-educated director Chloé Zhao was making her first feature (Songs My Brother Taught Me) she met a group of rodeo cowboys, including Brady Jandreau. Sometime after that, Brady sustained a serious and tragic head injury; he was advised by his doctors to stay off horses and find a new direction in his life because any further injury would kill him. The director used his story for this, her next film, and cast his family and friends in supporting roles. Winner of the Director’s Fortnight Award at Cannes last spring, in this poetic film with stunning cinematography she explores this broken man’s search for a new identity as he tries to redefine his idea of what it means to be a man in America’s heartland.
