A widowed and troubled Iraq War vet (Ben Foster, Hell or High Water) raising his teenage daughter (new actress Thomasin McKenzie) far off the grid in an illegal campsite in a park. Their lives are upended when they are discovered by rangers, taken to civilization, and settled in a rural commune on a tree farm. She adapts to her new environment, making friends and discovering new interests, but any roof over her father's head is too much. Soon they take off on the run again. This quietly powerful and heartfelt film, adapted from the novel My Abandonment inspired by a true story, is the third feature from director and co-writer Debra Granik (Winter's Bone), and, with truthful characters, explores the divergent needs of a teen and her dad, the challenges of letting one's child grow into an adult, and the need for community.
