(NR) 102min [in French & Polynesian with subtitles]
Sep 25 - 27, 5:30 & 7:45
This riveting portrait of Paul Gauguin follows the influential artist during the period when he left his family in Paris to be rejuvenated artistically in French Polynesia, freeing himself from the moral, political and aesthetic codes of civilized Europe. Going ever deeper into the jungle he deals with poverty, solitude and sickness, only saved by the young Tahitian woman who became his muse and wife who will be the subject of some of his greatest paintings, even though he died unknown and penniless. Based on his own travel diaries, director Edouard Deluc has made a beautiful film that features a charismatic performance by lead actor Vincent Cassel.
