Keira Knightly gives an authentic performance as the celebrated French author who battled gender norms at the turn of the twentieth century. A country girl at the beginning of the film, she transforms into a worldly woman after marrying a years older husband (Dominic West), a publisher who uses her as his ghost writer getting her to adapt her diaries into a series of books. But he is also a philanderer, but neither seems to mind if his wife cheats on him, as long as it isn’t with another man. Director Wash Westmoreland has made an intelligent and absorbing film.
