This Palme d'Or winner (Cannes Film Fest's highest honor) is from the leading Japanese filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose uniformly excellent and humanist films, from Maborosi and After Life thru After the Storm and Our Little Sister, have all featured characters that you care about. His latest, a portrait of a happy family that is eventually revealed to be not quite as it seems, was constructed out of a local news article about a rag-tag group of grifters who take in an abused young girl. Featuring the late actress Kiki Kirin (Sweet Bean) as the matriarch, this is a charming, absorbing, and textured gem exploring the question of what it means to be a family.
