Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) both give expertly nuanced performances in this story of a friendship forged across the barriers of race and class. In the early 1960s, renowned pianist Dr. Don Shirley hires Italian-American bouncer Tony "the Lip" to drive him thru the Jim Crow south on a concert tour. Using "the Green Book" to guide them to friendly and safe spots for African Americans, they confront racism as well as humanity, and set aside their differences on this journey of a lifetime. This wonderfully charming and crowd-pleasing comedy drama was this fall's surprise winner of the Audience Award at Toronto, as well as a Golden Globe nominee for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor and screenplay. Directed by Peter Farrelly in his first film not directed with his brother, the vivid screenplay was co-written by Tony's son based on his father's stories.
