This female-driven period comedy of no manners features two headstrong women vying for the attention of their ailing and tragic Queen. Olivia Coleman is Queen Anne, British monarch in the early 1700s. Rachel Weisz is Lady Sarah, the Queen’s confidante who is actually governing. Emma Stone is Abigail, a fallen cousin of Sarah’s who is just looking for work but also becomes a formidable opponent in service to the Queen as she exerts her ambition to rejoin the aristocracy. Original Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) has taken a sharply written script making an accessible yet unique film with a trio of excellent performances that has earned five Golden Globe nominations.
