Director Barry Jenkins follows his Oscar-winning film Moonlight with this timely and timeless, tenderly romantic love story he adapted from James Baldwin’s 5th novel. Set in early 1970s Harlem, a time when racial injustice was rampant, a young couple Tish (Kiki Layne) and Fonny (Stephen James, Race), friends since childhood, are engaged and expecting. Their dreams of a life together are derailed when Fonny is arrested and jailed for a crime he did not commit. Oscar nominations include Best Supporting Actress for Regina King who plays Kiki’s supportive mom, Best Adapted screenplay for Barry Jenkins, and best Original Score.
