This three times Oscar-nominated film, for Foreign Language film, for Cinematography and for Director Pawel Pawlikowski (Oscar-winner Ida), is a richly detailed, powerful and captivating personal story based on the director’s parents tortuous relationship that took place across post-WWII Europe on both sides of the Iron Curtain. His father was an ethnomusicologist trying to record local Polish folksongs before they were lost; his mother was a young singer who captivated him. They become part of a folk music ensemble but are repeatedly separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate.
