A mysterious woman, her doctor lover and a German refugee who has taken the identity of a dead writer who was the woman's missing husband, form a romantic triangle in this adaptation of Anna Seghers' 1944 novel. Set in Marseille, a setting off point for people fleeing German fascists who are overrunning France, this interesting and rewarding thriller from German director Christian Petzold (Phoenix, Barbara) blurs the past and the present by using clues of both the 1940s and the present time making an alluring puzzle.
