As Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner brought to film the storytelling tradition of the Canadian Inuit by recreating a piece of this people’s mythology, so does Australian director Rolf De Beers (The Quiet Room) in his timeless new film immerse us into the ancient culture of the Ramingining Aboriginal people. David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Rabbit-Proof Fence), portraying the storyteller, transports us to another world, north-central Australia a millennium ago, where a romantic crisis triggers the telling of an ancient lesson during the seasonal canoe-building and goose egg gathering time. Powerfully seductive cinematography by Ian Jones completes this marvelous, first all-Aboriginal feature film.
