Guatemalan writer/director Jayro Bustamante makes his film debut with this authentic and richly detailed portrait of a family in an isolated Mayan coffee farming village. Maria is a young woman about to be married off by her parents to the plantation’s foreman, which will ensure their continued employment. However, in her heart she loves a young worker, less reliable and prone to drinking, whose dream is to go to the US, just on the other side of the nearby volcano, he tells her. She makes choices that force her into the modern world where her culture is unknown.
