The formative years of the acclaimed and revered author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are brought to life in this magical film from Finnish director Dome Karukoski. John Ronald (Nicholas Hoult), an orphan raised as a ward of the Catholic Church, finds a good group of like-minded mates at school with whom he maintains friendships into college and the horror that was WWI. Another orphan, Edith (Lily Collins) becomes his muse and love despite a tumultuous courtship. A professor of philology (Derek Jacoby) encourages his love of languages. These experiences would later inspire his famous novels.
