Michael B. Jordan gives a strong performance as Harvard educated defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer in the late 1980’s who moved to Alabama to work with death-row inmates in this powerful and absorbing tale of social justice, based on true events. He takes on pro-bono appeals for several men facing execution, discovering an innocent man falsely accused (Jamie Foxx) as well as helping a man who has admitted his crime (Rob Morgan). (Stevenson has since gone on to become a visionary leader in criminal justice reform.) The excellent cast in this absorbing true story that questions the appropriateness of the death penalty from director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) includes Brie Larson, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, and O’Shea Jackson Jr.
